Dog Diarrhea: Causes, Home Treatment and When to See the Vet
Diarrhea is one of the most common reasons people call the vet. The good news: most cases in adult dogs are short-lived and manageable at home. The important caveat: some cases — bloody diarrhea, puppies with diarrhea, or diarrhea with other symptoms — are genuinely urgent.
Common Harmless Causes
- Dietary change: Switching food too quickly disrupts the gut microbiome. Always transition over 7–10 days.
- Dietary indiscretion: Garbage raiding, scavenging on walks, table scraps.
- Stress: Travel, vet visits, a change in routine — the gut-brain axis in dogs is very sensitive.
- Mild food intolerance
Medical Causes
- Parasites: Giardia, hookworms, whipworms — often causing mucousy or bloody stools. Fecal exam confirms.
- Bacterial infection: Salmonella, Campylobacter, Clostridium.
- Viral: Parvovirus — severe, bloody, life-threatening, especially in unvaccinated puppies. If a puppy has bloody diarrhea and vomiting: emergency.
- Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD): Chronic, recurring diarrhea often with weight loss.
- Pancreatitis: Combined with vomiting and abdominal pain.
- Haemorrhagic gastroenteritis (HGE): Sudden severe bloody diarrhea, often without a clear trigger. Rapid dehydration. Veterinary emergency.
Emergency Signs — See the Vet Now
- Blood in stool — red or black/tarry
- Weakness, lethargy, or collapse
- Concurrent vomiting over several hours
- A puppy with diarrhea — always urgent (parvovirus risk)
- Diarrhea lasting more than 24–48 hours without improvement
- Signs of dehydration: dry gums, skin that doesn't spring back
Home Management for Mild Cases
- Bland diet: Plain boiled chicken (no skin or bones) plus white rice or plain canned pumpkin (good fibre). Feed small, frequent meals.
- Water: Keep it available. Small amounts frequently if the dog is also vomiting.
- Probiotics: Dog-specific probiotics (FortiFlora, Purina Pro Plan) support gut flora recovery.
- Rest: Limit exercise while the gut recovers.
If no improvement after 24 hours, or any worsening: call the vet.
What Not to Do
- Don't give human anti-diarrhea medication (Imodium/loperamide can be dangerous for dogs, especially Collies and MDR1-mutated breeds)
- Don't wait more than 12 hours with a puppy — parvovirus can be fatal within 24–48 hours of symptom onset
