Beach access for dogs: the seasonal reality
Most UK coastal councils restrict dogs on the main bathing beaches between 1 May and 30 September (sometimes Easter to October). Off-season most beaches are dog paradise. In summer you need to know which sections, which times, and where year-round dog beaches sit.

The summer rule book (England and Wales)
- Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs): councils set local seasonal bans. Check council website before travelling.
- Lead restrictions: many beaches require a lead even where dogs are allowed.
- Poo bag fines: up to £100 fixed penalty.
- XL Bullies: muzzle and lead at all times — no exception on beaches.
- Blue flag beaches: typically have stricter summer bans.
Beach safety for dogs
- Fresh water always available — saltwater causes vomiting and dehydration.
- Pad burns on hot sand — test with your palm; if uncomfortable for 5 seconds, too hot.
- Tide awareness — collies and Labradors will swim out further than is safe.
- Jellyfish stings common in Cornwall, Pembrokeshire and the Irish coast.
- Ear care after swimming, especially for Cockers and Cavaliers.
- Lyme disease in dunes and marram grass — check for ticks.
How CanAI helps
Use the CanAI travel checklist for beach days — water bowl, towel, post-swim shampoo, ear care. Ask the AI chat about saltwater tolerance, tick prevention or post-beach grooming. Keep vaccines current — Lepto and tick coverage especially matter for coastal areas.
