What the data really shows
The UK Kennel Club publishes annual breed-registration statistics. They cover pedigree dogs registered with the Kennel Club — so crossbreeds, designer mixes and non-registered pedigrees aren't counted. Even so, the trends are real.
Top 10 most-registered breeds in the UK (2025 data for 2026)
- Labrador Retriever — long-time number one, ~30,000+ registrations per year.
- French Bulldog — slipping after years of dominance; respiratory and BVT concerns plus rising Defra scrutiny.
- Cocker Spaniel — quietly the rising family star, ~25,000/year.
- Dachshund — all three coat types, especially Miniature Smooth and Wire.
- Bulldog (English) — stable, despite breathing controversies.
- Springer Spaniel — working country dog favourite.
- Pug — recovering after pandemic-era price crash.
- Border Collie — rural staple.
- Golden Retriever — solid family choice.
- Miniature Schnauzer — non-shedding allergy-friendly favourite.
Three trends shaping 2026
1. The XL Bully effect
After the 2024 ban, registered XL Bullies must hold a Certificate of Exemption, be neutered, muzzled in public and on lead. New breeding of the type is illegal. Effects: surge of XL-cross rescues, increased adoption activity at major rescues, and several smaller rescues now refusing intake.
2. French Bulldog backlash
French Bulldogs have peaked. Rising awareness of brachycephalic suffering, surgical costs (£3,000-6,000 for BOAS surgery), insurance hikes (£60-100/month on average) and ethical concerns have shifted buyer choices.
3. Designer crossbreeds (not counted, but dominant)
Cockapoos, Cavapoos, Labradoodles, Goldendoodles — none registered with the Kennel Club. But on the ground, they may now exceed any single pedigree breed in numbers. Lower shedding, hybrid-vigour marketing, social media — they're not going away.
The breeds rising in 2026
- Cocker Spaniel — overtaking French Bulldog as the family choice.
- Hungarian Vizsla — active family favourite.
- Whippet — quiet apartment-friendly affection.
- Bernese Mountain Dog — despite short lifespan.
- Italian Spinone — for slower-paced country life.
The breeds in decline
- French Bulldog and Pug — health and ethical concerns.
- German Shepherd — declining for years, hip dysplasia and energy concerns.
- Native UK breeds: Welsh Corgi (Pembroke and Cardigan), Sussex Spaniel, Otterhound — endangered.
